From Frankfurt Airport (FRA)

The trip from Frankfurt Airport ("Fernbahnhof") to Aachen takes approximately 2-2.5 hours.

Most connections require a change of trains at Cologne Central station. The price ranges from 57€ to 81€.

From Düsseldorf Airport (DUS)

The trip from Düsseldorf Airport to Aachen takes approximately 1.5 hours. Some connections require a change of trains at Düsseldorf Central station or Cologne Central station.

The price ranges from 21€ to 29€.

From Cologne/Bonn (Köln/Bonn) Airport (CGN)

The trip from Cologne/Bonn Airport to Aachen takes approximately 1–1.5 hours, with a change of trains at Cologne Central station. The price is approximately 24€.

From Aachen Central Station

In Aachen the best way to reach any place of interest is by bus or by foot. The main shopping area, the Aachen Cathedral, and the RWTH are situated close beside each other. Thus it is easy to walk from one place to another. Inside the city you find a lot of old architecture, little restaurants and pubs to enjoy a good meal and the Aachen culture.

1. By Bus:

In front of Aachen Central station there is a bus stop from which you can take a bus to your location in Aachen. The bus lines 3 and 13 are those you will probably need. They have a capital letter (A or B) behind the number, which refers to the direction of rotation. As the traffic network in Aachen's city center is constructed in rings, it does not matter in which direction you ride, but it may be a matter of time. Nevertheless you may possibly have to take a bus from across the road after leaving Aachen Central station.

The time table with departures and a road map with the destinations can be found at the bus stop. Tickets can be bought from the driver. Further information concerning fares and bus routes under can be found here and here.

Here are some of the most important bus lines which will bring you to points of interest:

(1) Hochschule (bus stop in front of the main building of the RWTH)

Bus lines: 13A (~20 min), 13B (~10 min) (the stop is on the other side of the street outside Central station). They depart every 15 or 30 minutes (depending on the time of the day) and ride from 6.30 am to 7 pm (mon–fri), 10 am to 5 pm (sat).

(2) Ponttor (H.4 Pontwall) (bus stop on Pontstrasse – the main street where students go for lunch or dinner) Same bus lines as for Technische Hochschule, additionally 3 A (~15 min) rides every 15/30 minutes from 5.30 am to 11 pm (mon–sat), 9 am to 11 pm (sun).

(3) Elisenbrunnen (famous thermal spring of Aachen, right in the city center, situated next to the tourist information and close to the main shopping area) Bus lines: 11, 14, 21, 44 ... (~5 min).

2. By Taxi:

There is also a very reliable taxi service at Aachen Central station. Just walk out the front door and you will see the available service on the right side. Prices depend upon your destination in Aachen.

The following hotels are recommended to participants. It is possible to ask the local organisers for help with the booking of a room. If you plan to book your room by yourself, mention that you are a participant of the CASC 2017 conference organised by the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Sciences. You will then receive a discount on the regular price.

The hotel and the conference venue are pointed out on this map. The conference will take place in the AMSS South Building. This PDF file contains information about getting to the hotels from the airport. In particular, it contains instructions in Chinese which one can show to a taxi driver.

The organisers can offer 10 free places for accommodation. Applications for one of these places should be send either to the General Chair Werner M. Seiler or to the Chair of the local organisation committee Jin-San Cheng until August 30th. Preference will be given to student participants or participants from developing countries.

Participants who need a letter of invitation for obtaining a visa for Romania should contact as soon as possible the Local Organization Committee (casc2016ro@gmail.com) and provide all information necessary for the letter. This concerns in particular the address to which the letter should be sent. In some cases the letter of invitation must contain information like a passport number, it is then your responsibility to provide such data. They will then receive first by e-mail an electronic version of such a letter and later by surface mail the original. Please take into account that consulates usually require the hand signed original and that surface mail may take quite a while. We are not able to send letters via a courier service.

Social Programme

On Wednesday afternoon we will have an excursion to the famous Summer Palace. All participants and registered accompanying persons will be transferred by bus to the Summer Palace and afterwards to the location of the Conference Dinner which will be on Wednesday evening.

Linear Differential Systems with Infinite Power Series Cofficients:

Infinite power series play an important role in mathematical studies. Those series may appear as inputs for certain mathematical problems. In order to be able to discuss the corresponding algorithms, we must agree on representation of the infinite series (algorithm inputs are always objects, represented by specific finite words in some alphabet). This talk examines two possible solutions to the problem of representation of power series. First, we consider the algorithmic representation. For each series, an algorithm is specified that, given an integer i, finds the coefficient of x^i. Any deterministic algorithms are allowed (any such algorithm defines a so called constructive series). Second, we consider a representation in an approximate form, namely, in a truncated form.

On Simple Multiple Zeros of Polynomial Systems:

Given a polynomial system $f$ with a multiple zero of simple singularity, we provide a lower bound on the minimal distance between the simple multiple zero and other of $f$. For an approximate simple multiple zero $x$ of multiplicity $k$, we give a numerical criterion for $f$ has $k$ roots in the ball of radius $r$ around $x$. This is ongoing joint work with Zhiwei Hao, Wenrong Jiang, Nan Li.

CASC 2017 will feature for the first time tutorials on the topics related to the CASC universe. They will take place on the first day of the conference. They will be presented by leading experts in the respective field and targeted at graduate students and non-specialists. Participation is open to all registered participants of CASC 2017 without any additional fee.

Sparse interpolation and its connections to Padé approximation, signal processing, and tensor decomposition:

A mathematical model is called sparse if it is a combination of only a few non-zero terms. In sparse interpolation, the aim is to determine both the support of the sparse linear combination and the scalar coefficients in the representation, from a small or minimal amount of data samples. Sparse techniques solve the problem statement from a number of samples proportional to the number of terms in the representation rather than the number of available data points or available generating elements. Sparse representations reduce the complexity in several ways: data collection, algorithmic complexity, model complexity.

In this tutorial, we introduce sparse interpolation. We indicate the connections between sparse interpolation, generalized eigenvalue computation, exponential analysis, rational approximation, and tensor decomposition. In the past few years, insight gained from the computer algebra community combined with methods developed by the numerical analysis community, has led to significant progress in several very practical and real-life signal processing applications. We make use of tools such as the singular value decomposition and various convergence results for Padé approximants to regularize an otherwise inverse problem. Classical resolution limitations in signal processing with respect to frequency and decay rates, are overcome.

We particularly focus on multi-exponential models. These models appear, for instance, in transient detection, motor fault diagnosis, electrophysiology, magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy, vibration analysis, fluorescence lifetime imaging, music signal processing, direction of arrival estimation in wireless communication systems, dynamic spectrum management such as in cognitive radio, and so on. The connection with tensor decomposition leads to new possibilities to exploit sparsity in analyzing tensor-structured datasets.

Numerical Algebraic Geometry in the Cloud

Solving a problem in algebraic geometry with numerical algorithms involves embedding the problem in a family of problems with the same structure. The solver then proceeds from an easier to solve instance in the family to the given problem.

As polynomial homotopy methods have progressed from computing approximations for isolated solutions into the manipulation of positive solution sets, the technology (both hardware and software) has evolved as well. Cloud computing offers the user both algorithms and computers, which has implications for what it means to solve a problem. The tutorial will introduce numerical algebraic geometry and the demonstration will give participants hands on experience with our web interface, which builds on PHCpack and phcpy. This is joint work with Nathan Bliss and Jeff Sommars.
